Slash Transition
Slash Transition is a four-year programme, from 2023 to 2027, that examines the role of sound artists in transitioning territories. This project stems from two main observations: on the one hand, the economic models derived from live performances and streaming do not guarantee a viable long-term career; on the other hand, it is imperative to develop new economic models to enable artists to build sustainable careers while taking into account societal transformations.
The goal behind Slash Transition is to answer the following questions:
- How can a sound artist accompany the transformations of a territory while consolidating their career in a virtuous manner?
- How can an artist play an active role in the construction of the city?
The seven partners involved in this programme are located in areas facing urban, economic, social, and ecological transitions, raising new questions such as social diversity, gentrification, and security.
Collab Lab 2025
In 2024, the Slash Transition project offered five artists the opportunity to travel through five transitioning territories, allowing them to develop creative residency projects with the support of local facilitators.
L'Art Rue was pleased to host the first Slash Transition Collab Lab in Tunis, from 4 to 6 February 2025. The Collab Lab had two distinct parts: the first was open to the public and presented the sound installations of the five selected artists, while the second was reserved for the partners in the Slash programme, enabling them to analyse the first phase of the project and reflect together on the next stages.
Sound installations:
Larie (Portugal/Brazil), Change ∞
During his residency at L'Art Rue, Larie draws inspiration from the contrasting dynamics of the Medina of Tunis. As they wander around, they gather sounds that evoke an abundance of ‘layers’ made up of a variety of smells, colours and noises.
His work revolves around the inhabitants of the Medina and their feelings, testifying to the rich interiority that animates this urban space. They record voices that illustrate the transformations of the area over time. This creative process gives rise to a harmonic superposition of vocal and sonic perspectives, representing the diversity and complexity of the Medina as a territory in transition.
Gischt (Austria), When Dust Settles
WHEN DUST SETTLES, an immersive sound creation by artist Ursula Winterauer alias Gischt, conceived as part of her residency at Trempo. The work transforms construction noise into an acoustic reflection on the change and impermanence of contemporary life.
By reinterpreting recordings of old buildings, new machines and the voices of those involved in the transformation, Ursula creates a collision between the old and the new. The piece illustrates the history of demolition and reconstruction, with a duration that reflects the construction process.
Giorgi Koberidze (Georgia), Murmur
the immersive sound creation by Giorgi Koberidze, was produced during his artistic residency in Innsbruck, Austria with Openspace.innsbruck! His project, "Murmur - S'immerger dans les voix (silencieuses) de la transition", addresses the challenge of capturing the precious details often lost during urban transitions.
Giorgi shares: ‘During a transition, the most dangerous thing is to lose the essential elements that existed before. This phenomenon is universal, occurring in every time and place.’
Through his work, he highlights aspects such as nature, art, traditions and socio-cultural values that are often overlooked in favour of the new.
Fanch Dodeur (France), Multitude
In the Chugureti district of Tbilisi, Georgia, where industrialisation, gentrification and urbanisation are intertwined in the midst of emerging authoritarian politics, sound artist Fanch Dodeur is both a witness and an actor in this transformation. His MULTITUDE project, conceived as part of his residency with Mutant Radio, engages and transforms the region's sound footprints, preserving the sounds of everyday life and the experiences of a community fighting for survival in the face of oppressive evolution.
Using a device of 8 loudspeakers and granular synthesizers, Fanch creates a living archive that evokes the way in which our memories are woven and organised.
Amal Yaakoubi (Tunisia), Chelas Dar Fadhal
Amal Yaakoubi spent her artistic residency with Casa do Capitão in the Beato district of Lisbon. Immersed in exploring the concept of ‘liminal space’, she navigated through a territory in transition, revealing the worlds and identities that emerge in this context.
In her text, Amal shares her experience in Chelas, a district where she perceived both beauty and pain, written on the walls. She speaks of a system that is both corrupt and ruthless, but behind this superficiality she has also found an inspiring resilience. For her, Chelas reflects the reality of her own neighbourhood, Dar Fadhal, and resounds with the struggles and hopes we see everywhere.
Through her sound composition, Amal invites us to hear these voices, contemplate these roots, and recognise the connection between all places.
