At ground level, age-old movements weave the memory of a people. With the Mrazigue weavers of southern Tunisia, Sonia Kallel explores a thread art rooted in the earth, stretched toward departure.
Originally from the Middle East, the Mrazigues crossed Egypt and Libya before settling in Douz, in southern Tunisia. Despite settling down, their nomadic weaving persists — passed down from generation to generation, like a held breath, always ready for travel.
This weaving, practiced from North Africa to the borders of Tibet, becomes a living map of a shifting territory. Each thread carries the memory of a passage. Each gesture questions rootedness, exile, and the earth. In this vibrant work, the desert whispers the echo of an eternal back-and-forth.
The Grounding Point sheds light on the material, the transmission, and the persistence of a bodily movement that binds, reconnects and resists. Like a rope stretched between times, the silent voice of the weaving women draws a territory to inhabit differently.
