The Grounding Point

Sonia Kallel

Tunis

2025

Installation: sculpture of woven wool, wires, and metal support, variable dimensions, books, documentation material, and video.

Created in close collaboration with the Mrazig community, the sculptural work follows the gesture of nomadic weaving, where displacement and rootedness intertwine. The Mrazig community anchored themselves in Douz, Tunisia in the 12th century, yet have continued their ancestral tradition— like a held breath, as if always ready to depart. Through a prolonged and deep engagement with the Mrazig community, Kallel researched their history, learned their weaving technique, and worked with them for months, documenting every step along the way. Each thread of the large sculpture, taut and resistant, vibrates with questions about mysterious connections with the land, regardless of place or time.
