Plage Rose
Etel Adnan
Billboard, 2025: wallpaper and wood, based on the original drawing Plage Rose, 2020, Crayon on paper, 21,3 x 30,2 cm, courtesy the estate of the artist and Sfeir-Semler Gallery Beirut/Hamburg.
From her fifties onward, Adnan started creating small drawings specifically meant to become larger works: either weaved tapestries or murals. Because of her “bad back”, by her own account, she was never able to produce large-scale artworks – a process further hindered by the production costs and storage space needed for such works.
It was in Tunisia, where she met a master weaver, that she commissioned her first 2 tapestries, based on her drawings. We are paying homage to Adnan’s desire by producing a large-scale print of Plage Rose, a work manifesting a suspended moment of joy and peace in an otherwise conflicted world.
