Race, Categories, Interracial Unions, and Citizenship in the Italian Colonial Realm

Valentina Fusari & Adnen El Ghali

Italy

In the wake of the Red Sea, the miscegenation tells a complex story.

At the crossroads of routes, this region is a privileged witness to colonial upheavals: resource exploitation, militarization of territories and racial hierarchy. In Eritrea, the first Italian colony in Africa since 1890, these dynamics translated into laws prohibiting mixed marriages, relentless segregation, and the marginalization of children born from these unions, deprived of official recognition.

In this conference, Valentina Fusari sheds light on this little-known history, where miscegenation, far from being a mere cultural mixing, becomes a breeding ground for tension and discrimination, revealing how the intimate and the political spheres intertwine in the scars of the colonial past.
