Measures of Distance
Mona Hatoum
1988
Standard definition video, 15:26 min
An autobiographical video work on displacement, disorientation and the tremendous sense of loss as a result of the separation caused by the Lebanese war. Letters written by Hatoum's mother in Beirut to her daughter in London appear as text moving over still images of Hatoum's mother in the shower.
Taped conversations between mother and daughter, in which her mother speaks candidly about sexuality, her feelings, and her husband's objections to Hatoum's intimate observation of her mother's naked body, are intercut with Hatoum's voice reading the letters.
