Intervention in a public library

Commissioned and produced by L’Art Rue/Dream City.

The project reimagines the Mediterranean as a contested zone of rebellion, where historical pirate utopias and contemporary struggles for autonomy collide. From the 16th century, barbaric corsairs – Muslims, renegades and anarchical coalitions have appropriated the seas as a site of unlawful freedom.

These groups were described as the original anarchists, creating an autonomous space with alternative laws outside the empire. The work traces a lineage from 16th-century barbaric corsairs, renegades, and anarchical coalitions to contemporary fugitive networks, where the sea is proposed as a space to disappear, to resist, and exist ungoverned.
