"99 problèmes" by Hela Ammar

During her photo/video artistic residency at L'Art Rue from February to May 2017, Héla Ammar accompanied five young people from the Bab Jedid (Medina of Tunis) neighbourhood as they explored their territory.

Overcoming the precariousness and violence of their daily lives, their failures and frustrations, together they tried to explore possibilities that until then had not always been conceivable.

It is often said that every troubled period opens up a window of hope, and that the only thing that is certain and unchangeable is that nothing is certain or unchangeable.  It is probably this breach of hope that Héla Ammar unknowingly sought throughout her residency.

At the end of the residency, the video "99 problèmes" ("99 problems"), produced by the artist following her 3-month residency, was screened, followed by a meeting with Hela Ammar and a presentation of her approach in the form of a dialogue with the academic and art historian Elsa Despiney.
