5th edition of Dream City - 2015
Tunis, From 4 to 8 November
Dream City, a multidisciplinary biennial of contemporary art in public spaces, was held from 4 to 8 November 2015 in the heart of the Tunis medina.
For this 5th edition, the L'Art Rue association invited Tunisian and international artists to create over several long periods in the medina of Tunis. These included :
• Immersion and research residencies (May to August)
• Creation and production residencies (September to early November)
• Dissemination (4 to 8 November 2015)
These artists have been selected in advance by Dream City's creators and artistic directors - Selma and Sofiane OUISSI - and, for the first time, a guest curator, Jan GOOSSENS, artistic director of the Royal Flemish Theatre, the KVS, in Brussels. Jan Goossens works mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, setting up projects that explore social and territorial contexts. Together, they have decided to open up the borders and develop forgotten South-South exchanges by extending this edition to artists from Africa and the MENA region, as well as to European artists.
The artists selected for this year's event were asked to create a contextual work with, around and/or for a given population, responding to the theme chosen for this 5th edition of Dream City: Art and social links.
In a society in the throes of reconstruction, we need to lay the foundations for what we want for the future: art as the cement of a new society, art as a vehicle for social and inter-cultural cohesion. What kind of aesthetic for our continent? What kind of urban art, in situ, closely integrating the issues facing our populations? What kind of spaces should be invented, in tune with local issues and open to the world, to renew social ties in Tunisia? How can we defend the singularity of each individual while remaining open to the Other, in a world compartmentalised by fear?
The 5th edition of Dream City will address these questions in an attempt to introduce the new ways of thinking needed in the 21st century. We're responding to the prevailing nihilism with art and sensitivity.
This edition of Dream City attracted 6,180 spectators over 5 days, but around 10,430 festival-goers were able to see all the works, including those installed free of charge in public spaces.
Dream City offered a rich and varied programme featuring :
• 13 contextual artistic creations, all directly involving citizens;
• 23 artists from 11 different countries: Tunisia, France, Syria, Switzerland, Egypt, Belgium, Portugal, South Africa, United Kingdom, Italy, Democratic Republic of Congo;
• 3 free concerts ;
• A major exhibition at the Palais Kheireddine featuring visual artists from Tunisia, France and the Congo;
• 24 venues in the medina;
• A wide range of free events: performances, concerts, films, workshops, debates, etc.
Dream City directly employed 472 people from the medina, 14 international programmers came to this time dedicated to Art and in terms of press spin-offs more than a hundred articles, radio and television broadcasts.
