4th edition of Dream City - 2013

Journey to L'Estaque - From Tunis to Marseille from 18 to 19 May

Dream City, a multi-disciplinary itinerary of contemporary art in the public space in Tunis, is settling down in L'Estaque from 18 to 19 May 2013, welcomed by its residents and shopkeepers, who have opened their doors, their intimacy and their history to us.

After meeting the authors of the space from the Association Rio de l'Estaque, we were seduced by the stories of this territory that they generously shared with us. We found similarities between l'Estaque and the Medina in Tunis: neighbourhoods steeped in human history with strong links to immigration, the working classes and crafts, but also the core of the identity heritage of Tunis and Marseille.

But at a time when artists are being threatened to their very core in the wake of the Tunisian Revolution of 11 January 2011, how can we still dream of our world? Today, we are fighting for the fundamental rights of human dignity and freedom, and we want to help rebuild a country founded on the values of human relationships that place people at the heart of the challenges facing society. And to do that, we need to make our voices heard. Anne Guiot, Karwan's Artistic Director, has given us this opportunity, welcoming us with complete confidence. With generosity and curiosity, this partner from the North Shore has opened up to the methodology of a project created on the South Shore. The artists from the other side of the river bring their own voices and all the questions they raise in their work.

Can they make sense in L'Estaque? The selection of works has been made with this in mind, so that the history of the workers of Tunis can meet that of the workers of L'Estaque, so that the memory of an artist, the daughter of Greek immigrants in Tunis, can meet that of the children of immigrants in L'Estaque... The artistic proposals are part of the identification of Tunisia and the Mediterranean and a link between the places, the actions and the works proposed. And isn't the fight for freedom and human dignity universal?
