2025
Large-scale salt sculptures, 150 x 83 x 90 cm / 186 x 90 x 90 cm, 2025.
Originally commissioned and produced by 421 Arts Campus in 2025.
The Barbary lions appear as salt sculptures, suspended between extinction and myth. Once native to North Africa, these majestic animals were driven to extinction by 1950, casualties of successive imperial settlements and resource extraction. Ironically, their legacy lived on in heraldry as symbols of vigilant guardianship, forged by the very forces that destroyed them.
The postures of the lions in the installation reverse their inherited representations, free from their enforced role as imperial guardians. They appear to reclaim life in stillness, returning as spectral forms. (85)
