"Electro Btaihi" is a project halfway between traditional and underground music. It was born out of a residency at L'Art Rue from May to September 2018 and the need to explore new sounds to enrich the oral musical tradition in Tunisia.
Zied Zouari is developing a contemporary language combining Tunisian rhythms, Indian polyrhythm and jazz. It's a project in which ancestral chants and contemporary music intersect without limits, in a rare complicity.
Initially, the "Electro Btaihi" project was born at Art Rue following an artistic trio residency with Zied Zouari (violin, composition), Imed Twinlo (beatbox) and Ghassen Fendri (Guitar) in November 2016. The concept was a success and the trio gave dozens of concerts in Tunisia and abroad.
Wishing to deepen this work, in 2018, Zied Zouari is opening it up to artists from the interior regions of Tunisia in order to put his know-how at the service of the different local cultural identities.
From Berber songs to stambeli, from the music of the north-western Atlas to the tunes of the Tunisian desert, from the secular music of Zaghouan to the urban mâlouf of Tunis, the artist is multiplying his sources of inspiration and focusing on traditional regional music while retaining a contemporary dimension.
Together, Zied Zouari and his guests are (re)inventing a new Tunisian musical heritage, transforming it through contact with electronic music, jazz and Indian Carnatic music. After two work sessions in May and June 2018, 7 artists will join the trio for the continuation of this "Electro Btaihi" adventure.
