Sāni` صَانِع – Safahat Hamia

with Sonia Kallel and Mohamed Ben Sassi

The choice of theme for this second workshop of Sāni' صَانِع which took place in March 2021 is related to archiving and memory. Keeping, preserving, protecting, separating documents and becoming aware of the importance of a hardcover volume is the fundamental idea of this workshop. The art of binding will contribute to highlighting these notions and to making children aware of the richness of this profession and the multiple creative possibilities it offers.

Sāni' صَانِع is a meeting between a designer, a craftsman and some children around a craft and an object of Tunisian heritage. This project aims to revalorize, through the eyes and practice of a designer, an intangible heritage by allowing a group of children aged 6 to 12 to discover and practice a craft trade.

The last craftsman of book binding of the Medina agreed to open his workshop to give these children the opportunity to experience this craft: choosing the paper, connecting the pages by classifying them and defining their functions, sewing the whole document, drawing lines and writing a word on the bracelet... An experience that creates harmony between the child and the paper and an awareness of the importance of another profession close to extinction.
