Zifzafa

Lawrence Abu Hamdan

Dubai

In the heights of the occupied Golan, the wind rises. It stirs the land, the stories and the bodies. Zifzafa — an Arabic word that stands for a wind that shakes everything in its path — gives its name to Lawrence Abu Hamdan's performance.

In this performance, speech, soundscape, and real-time simulation unite to confront an impending storm: the installation of giant turbines and the cacophony that, with them, erases.

But the wind, in this instance, presents resistance. It carries songs, cries, memories. It documents what the noise tries to silence. Composed by Busher Kanj Abu Saleh and performed along with Amr Mdah, this performance captures the air as one holds a microphone toward the invisible.

Zifzafa questions old modes of coexistence with air and sound, now broken. The wind becomes a front line, a breath of struggle, a living archive.
