Sham3dan

Cairo
With Sham3dan, the Cairo-based duo Noura Seif Hassanein and Salma Abdel Salam continues their exploration of collective movement. Inspired by the Egyptian shamadan dance — where dancers balance silver candelabras on their heads — they reinvent this ancient art to bring forth three imaginary worlds, suspended out of time.
At the heart of this journey: seven performers, carried by Ismail Hosny's sound composition. Their slowness is density. Their movements, crossed by memory. Their silence, inhabited by invisible stories. The ritual becomes tension, balance, gentle friction between popular dance and contemporary language.
Here, nothing is superfluous. Only full, charged, anchored bodies. A collective unfolds—fragmented, yet united—like a raw and luminous breath. Sham3dan questions presence, heritage, and what it means, today, to dance together.
