L'Art Rue is organizing a conference-debate focused on the fears of the return of the authoritarian state and its consequences on the media sector, journalists in particular, and freedom of expres-sion in general.
This meeting about the authority of HAICA over the Tunisian media sector and the polemic around amending decree-law number 116 will allow raising issues related to the media sector in this par-ticular phase that Tunisia is going through.
Haythem el Mekki will moderate this meeting, in conversation with the professor of higher educa-tion at the Institute of Presse and Information Sciences Mr. Larbi Chouikha and Mr. Omar Wesleti, Vice President of HAICA and judge at the Tunis Court of Appeals.
About the panelists
Omar Wesleti is a judge at the Tunis Court of Appeals and Vice President at the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HAICA).
Larbi Chouikha was a professor of higher education at the Institute of Presse and Information Sci-ences (IPSI – University of Manouba – Tunisia) until October 2020, former member of the Inde-pendent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) in charge of media: (elections of October 23, 2011 of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), former member of the National Independent Authority for the Reform of Information and Communication (INRIC - March 2011 to July 2012). He is also the author of “The difficult transformation of media: Years of independence on the eve of the 2014 elections,” Tunis, Ed. Finzi, 2015; he is also coauthor with Éric Gobe (2015) of “History of Tunisia Since Independence,” Paris, Ed La Découverte. Coll Repères n°658, Paris.
Haythem El Mekki is one of the bloggers who began in the spring of 2010 to challenge censorship of the web imposed by Ben Ali. Today he has converted to satirical journalism.
