“Being a Woman” - On Egyptian Womanhoods and photographic Representation

by Beyn Collective

When and where?

Partners +

They research the representation and expression of the visual identity of womanhood in Egypt, projecting questions of intersectional feminism and the stereotypes surrounding Arab women. This involves setting up participatory research based on upstream observations, creating a database on the subject and an open participatory, interactive exhibition encouraging discussion and reflection.

The exhibition will take place in Cairo first, and then in Hamburg, Germany. They want to allow the Egyptian audience to document their experiences and reactions in order to include them as an additional layer in the Hamburg exhibition. This documentation will take place in the form of different workshops working with various means of expression. Including multiple voices from Egypt allows them to instigate and contribute to a transnational discourse on feminism and to challenge mainstream (mis)representation of Arab women in Europe.
