Theater Workshop
with Lobna Mlika
2021-2022
Ecole primaire publique Rue el Marr
L'Art Rue
The European Union within the framework of the “Deconstructing Violence through Art” project until January 2021.
After having worked in spring 2021 with the children of the school of El Marr Street on the construction of a character in the theatre, Lobna Mlika will explore with the children of this same school in spring 2022 a theatre workshop to work on body expression.
The initial idea was to work on the tale "Alice in Wonderland": discover the fable, meet the characters, note the key moments and then improvise to dramatise. When they reached the improvisation phase, the children expressed a real desire to free themselves from the "overly imaginary" text and move towards something closer to their reality in order to tell it. This gave rise to an adaptation of the previously chosen methodology by trying, first of all, to help the children to verbalise in order to understand together their deepest motivations and to decide on the themes they could choose themselves.
Violence was the main theme (in the family/ in the street/ at school). The Augusto Boal method was chosen by the facilitator, Lobna Mlika, to try to unravel the mechanisms of violence as presented by the children. We then had to choose together the axis that interested them the most and integrate the work on the imaginary as a possibility to act on reality.
All of this resulted in a 20-minute show "Between Dream and Reality" in which they played their own roles: children playing "Alice in Wonderland" but who, along the way, change their minds.
>> This workshop led to a performance on Saturday 28 May 2022 in the school with the children and their parents. The performance in the school was followed by a debate on the issue of violence with the parents and teachers present.
About the theatre work in this school in spring 2021
How to build a theatrical stage character? From January to the end of May 2021, over more than 50 sessions, the children attending the public primary school on Marr street in the Medina of Tunis were introduced to theater. Comedian and actress Lobna Mlika works on the process of creating an imaginary character from a text, “The Trial of the Wolf”, inspired by the German Brothers Grimm tale “Little Red Riding Hood”.
The objectives of this workshop are as follows: to understand, while playing, the process of creat-ing a character in theater; to work on theatrical tools of expression such as the use of words / voice, gestures / the body; to learn to integrate oneself into a group (theater is essentially group work); to have fun playing imaginary characters and learning some acting techniques.
The methodology revolves around the stages of: group preparation / integration, vocal articulation of the text (expressive reading + comprehension), spatial arrangement of performers (work on the body / space), the development of a character's identity card and acting technique as well as the creation of props and costumes.
