Water No Get Enemy: Counter-Cartographies of Diaspora is a multifaceted research project that develops a novel model of resistance to neocolonial practices of crude oil extraction and ecocide within the Niger Delta. Within this region, transnational corporations have systematically partitioned the local wetlands for private enterprise.
Taking the form of a narrative essay film, Kuforiji’s project proposes a reorientation of our relationship to resource use, informed by Indigenous epistemologies and Kalabari masquerade, a traditional practice of Nigerian performance. Calling into question the ramifications of extractive architectural technologies, the film relays the story of Wale, a British-born Nigerian navigating his fragmented understanding of Nigerian culture and history through a hybridised masquerade that brings multiple diasporic sites into conversation.
