The Goldberg Variations were composed by Bach in his last years, when he was pushing back the boundaries of musical themes in a game of variations, canons and fugues. He began with a simple, calm melody which, combined with an underlying bass line, unfolds into a musical universe that reveals itself with extraordinary diversity and breathtaking complexity.
Accompanied by pianist Alain Franco, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her journey with Bach. Whereas her previous work on Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos brought together a large number of dancers, this piece returns to the essentials with a solo performance danced by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker herself. In this way, she remains true to her principle of using the score as a model for the choreography.
With no less than one Aria and thirty variations, the music challenges the choreography to find a dance form capable of adaptation and flexibility while retaining an immutable core. For Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, it is above all an invitation to consolidate the path she has travelled as an artist, asking the questions of today in her ongoing search for a personal choreographic language.
