1st edition od Dream City
From 8 to 10 November, Tunis Medina
The first Dream City festival, an itinerary of performances, was conceived as an artistic gesture by choreographers and dancers Selma and Sofiane Ouissi in the medina of Tunis.
Held from 8 to 10 November 2007, it was the culmination of the work of a collective of Tunisian artists who had come together to reclaim public space through art.
Dream City brings together Tunisian artists who find in this proposal a breath of fresh air to activate other artistic territories. Together, the idea is to dream of a city in harmony with its past and its modernity; to dream of a city sown with the seeds of local initiatives aimed at bringing residents together through cultural action and its social approach.
Dream City dreams of a city in harmony with its past and its modernity, a city sown with the seeds of local initiatives aimed at bringing inhabitants together through cultural action and its social approach. Dream City breathes new life into those daily journeys on which ‘passing travellers’ no longer stop.
Selma and Sofiane Ouissi dreamt of taking art on the road and meeting the people who make up the city. They dreamt that culture would be present on every street corner, enabling everyday life to become a space-time and a space of jubilation for those who don't know how to reach it.
In response to this dream, they wanted to invite young Tunisian artists from different disciplines to work on the city/art/space link.
For nearly two months, they met with the help of city specialists to discuss this theme. The result was a series of works of art that are the fruit of real collective work and dialogue. By taking over unusual places in the Medina, the artists are not content to simply decorate a route, but to engage with passers-by and accompany them on their journey.
They create a genuine dialogue between the city and contemporary art.
Dream City is a time/space for inventing, innovating and exploring, a space for friction, contamination and emergence, a living project that does not impose a single, immutable mould for the creation, performance and consumption of shows, but rather proposes a renewal.
The ambition of this project is not to commemorate, but to look to the future and, in a way, to inscribe the city's durability in an artistic representation.
