Artist Residency — Philipp Eden
L’Art Rue x Pro Helvetia — Arab Region
As part of Pro Helvetia’s annual residency programme, which offers Swiss artists and those from regions covered by its liaison offices extended periods for research in different contexts, Philipp Eden has been selected for a residency in the Arab Region. From 995 applications this year, selections were made on the basis of clarity, coherence and engagement with the local context, as well as the way the residency experience fits into each artist’s professional trajectory. L’Art Rue hosts Philipp in partnership with Pro Helvetia Cairo, a collaboration aimed at fostering lasting exchanges and projects rooted in the local territory.
Research project presentation: Sounding Hospitality
Philipp Eden’s residency at L’Art Rue, from May 26 to July 21, focuses on the development of Sounding Hospitality, a research project that examines hospitality as everyday practice, living memory and a mode of coexistence.
Through encounters, sound recordings, conversations and observations in the Medina, at zaouïas and other gathering and spiritual sites, the project explores how poetry, music, storytelling, food and ritual transmit knowledge and shared ways of life. The work also reflects on how colonial histories and contemporary power relations still shape cultural flows and practices. As a near-outsider, Philipp also interrogates his own position between proximity and distance.
Cross-disciplinary approach:
For three weeks as part of Philipp’s two-month residency, visual artists Irena Eden and Stijn Lernout are joining him in his research to explore the concepts of hospitality and ritual in greater depth through visual explorations, discussions and field trips. In the last years, the duo has focused on the Mediterranean region, and currently their research concentrates on the Mediterranean Lingua Franca, a historical contact language. The pre-concert talk will offer an insight into their artistic practice and recent projects.
On 7 July at 6.30 pm, an artistic evening will form part of Philipp’s residency: a presentation of the artistic approach of visual artists Irena Eden and Stijn Lernout, invited by Philipp Eden as part of his residency, followed by a concert by Philipp Eden himself.
Philipp Eden's artistic residency is a project by L'Art Rue, supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, Pro Helvetia Cairo, and made possible through the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
