Al Qabali is a new research and performative project that Tarek Atoui started in 2015 and premiered in Córdoba with a first solo performance in 2022. In Al Qabali, Atoui layers and conjures sounds according to the Tarab–a trance-inducing Arab musical tradition–, based on a collection of musical recordings of rural traditions from tribes and villages across the Atlas to the Persian Gulf, following the road of the Tuareg people.
On his intimate journey Atoui combines recordings from weddings in Bahrain, religious celebration in Ouarzazate, traditional gatherings, and diwan majlises in Kuwait, Sharjah, and Oman.
